In this interview, CEO of Motherlove, Silencia Cox sat down with us to share the founding story behind 30-year-old Motherlove Herbal Company and how their values differentiate them on the marketplace.

What inspired the founding of your brand?

Motherlove was founded by my mother, Kathryn Higgins, while she was pregnant with me. Her love for herbs and her passion for natural remedies led her to develop a line of trusted body care products and herbal supplements specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

What are your brand’s core values?

Motherlove is a triple bottom line business in which we prioritize people and planet, as well as profits. Providing only the highest quality herbal products made in an environmentally sustainable way is at the core of what we do.

Describe one way you try to keep innovating with your brand.

While we are always listening to what moms need the most and have introduced quite a few new products over the past couple of years, many of our products are the original formulations my mother created in her kitchen over 30 years ago. Although we have refined our processes, our best-selling products are the same herbal remedies we have always offered. Consistent high quality is what our brand reputation was built on.

Talk about a roadblock or a challenge you faced as a business owner; have you overcome this? If so, please tell us how you did or how you’re working on it.

A noticeable and widespread challenge in manufacturing is certainly supply chain shortages. We are committed to using only the highest quality ingredients, so sourcing has been even more of a challenge recently. As a result, we must hold larger inventory and raw ingredients to ensure a continuous supply of products.

What inspires you to keep going every day?

When we connect with consumers that tell us Motherlove products were a “life saver” or that “they couldn’t have done it without us” when they had their baby, it reassures everyone at Motherlove that we are doing impactful work that truly support mothers. It is incredibly rewarding.

How did you know you had a good product-market fit?

Since our creation, Motherlove has always been a very niche brand that is focused specifically in supporting pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. The mainstream continues to shift towards more natural and better-for-you products, especially during this time of life. Motherlove’s simple and effective products easily fit the need state of our consumer.

What are your aspirations for your brand 10 years from now?

Motherlove is dedicated to providing organic herbal remedies to mothers everywhere. With over 30 years of experience and a growing need from new mothers, we will continue our mission of connecting motherhood to Mother Earth in even more marketplaces.
